You don't have to disable it.
What I've done for my mom, was, there was router from AT&T that didn't reach all through the house. So I hooked another LinkSYS wireless router to it with a regular network cat5 cable that I ran through the house, and turned the router function off on the LinkSYS. And that turned it into an access point. One network, one 'router' and two wireless access points.

I ran a cable through the laundry room and some kitchen cabnets.

My router is all hardwired. I got 4 jacks through out the house and they all come to a 4 way jack plate in the computer den with Cat5 patch cables going to the router. All the Cat5 I ran in the crawlspace and up in the walls was scrap pieces from work.
