I wen to school for 5 years to work on cars so I have rarely ever used a shop unless it was something I couldn't do from my garage. My experience with small shops has never been good. When I had the engine pulled in my Cobra the independant shop that the warranty company picked left everything under my hood a complete mess. I've had many other problems with indedependant shops that would make me think twice about taking my car back to one. Dealers have always done what I asked and haven't ever screwed me. They just cost about $30-$40 an hour more.
If you're getting a pretty new engine and trans then any work you'll need in the near future should be fairly cheap. It sucks Cash for Clunkers ended.
